Akbar, AR Rupee, Urdu Zafar Qarin, AH Alf
The date corresponds to the Islamic millennium year which occurred during Akbar’s 37th Regnal Year. Urdu Zafar Qarin – meaning ‘Camp associated with Victory’ is considered to be a mobile mint of Akbar’s which travelled along with his armies on his many expeditions and its mintage was used to pay military costs and celebrate victories. However, scholars have recently begun to uncover some evidence that rather that it being an actual mobile mint, Urdu Zafar Qarin coins were actually struck at permanent Imperial Mints across the empire. Scholars have also noted that Akbar actually celebrated the Islamic millennium in AH 990 and these coins dated Alf (AH 1000) were struck ten years prior.
