Akbar, Anonymous Rupee struck by Prince Salim at Allahabad
‘Baghrab wa Sharq’ couplet. The couplet reads ‘Hamesha hum chu z’re mehr-o-mah Raijbad, Baghrab wa Sharq Jahan Sikka-e-Ilahabad’ Translation: Like the gold of sun & moon, may ever be current in the world’s East and West, the coin of Allahabad. Emperor Akbar and his oldest son Prince Salim shared a complicated relationship. The young Prince had imperial ambitions and was coerced into an armed rebellion against his father. He set up court at Allahabad and issued coins, although not mentioning his own name. Later the father-son duo reconciled and Salim reigned after Akbar’s death as Jahangir. He blamed Akbar’s powerful courtier Abul Fazal for the misunderstandings between him and his father.
