Akbar, AR Rupee, Agra, IE 48, Khurdad
Broad Flan - Over-struck on Suri rupee. It is well-known that Suri copper coins were counter-struck during Akbar's reign (mainly with the UZQ mint-name). Extremely rare, though, are Akbar's rupees which were manufactured by counter-striking Suri rupees. Since the Suri coins chosen for this treatment were of a larger size than the usual Mughal rupees, it is apparent that special dies were made for counter-striking them, with larger and more ornate inscriptions. This manufacturing appears to have lasted only for a few months because a couple of specimens known. It clearly shows the traces of the under-type.
