Shah Jahan, AR Rupee, Aurangabad, AH 1049, RY 12
Mint name in the left margin. The city of Fatehnagar (Khadkee) was founded by Malik Ambar in 1610. It is widely believed that Aurangzeb changed its name to 'Aurangabad' during his second viceregal term in the Deccan in 1652-53. However, coins struck with the mintname 'Aurangabad' prove that this name change had been in effect as early as AH1048. This coin proves it had been in vogue in RY12 of Shahjahan, which corresponds to c.1638-39. The name-change must therefore have taken place during Aurangzeb's first term as the viceroy of Deccan (1636-1643).
