Aurangzeb, AR Rupee, Assam, AH 1073, RY 5
In 1661 the expansionist Mughal governor of Bengal, Mir Jumla, invaded and occupied Assam and Cooch Behar. Over the course of the next year, the Mughal armies faced their worst enemy: the tropical climate of the Bramaputra Region. The Mughal forces under Mir Jumla occupied the capital of Assam in 1662/63, forcing the local raja, Jayadhvaja Simha, to pay tribute to the Mughal Emperor, and it is possibly that this coin was struck for that payment. The mint was originally read as Sham, but a recent discovery revealed the alif before the name, so the mint is Assâm. By 1663 the debilitated Mughals withdrew from Assam and Mir Jumla was deposed. These exceptional rupees fit exactly within this period.
