Akbar, AR Rupee, Asir, IE 46, Farwardin
The fortress of Asir (Asirgarh) was conquered by Akbar from Bahadur Khan Faruqi, the rebel ruler of Khandesh, after a prolonged siege in January 1601. It was the last major conquest of his reign, in a campaign he undertook under his own command. After his return to Agra, Akbar assumed the title of 'Emperor of the Deccan'. During this campaign he struck extremely rare, well-known gold mohurs with imagery of a Hawk, in Isfandarmuz 45. No silver rupee was known prior to the discovery of this unique coin. Farwardin 46 marks the first new year after the conquest so this must undoubtedly a special issue struck around the Nauroz festival which marked not only the beginning of the Iranian new solar year but also the new regnal year. Flan of 35mm along with complete dotted border surely suggests a ceremonial issue.
