Phonda was very strategic and important town located in Northern border of Goa. During Konkan Campaign of Mughals under leadership of Shah Alam Bahadur, it was captured by Mughals. Later Portuguese recaptured it. Chattrapati Sambhaji Maharaj himself fought against Portuguese at Phonda.
