Shah Jahan, AR Rupee, Dar-ul-Khilafat Shahjahanabad, AH 1069, Post-Deposition issue
Post-Deposition Issue. ‘Octofoil in Centre’ type. The confinement of Shah Jahan took place on 17 Ramzan 1068 (8 June 1658) in his 32nd Regnal Year. Aurangzeb’s first coronation took place on the 31st of July 1658. However coins were still struck in Shah Jahan’s name. The year AH 1069 begins on 29th September 1658, a good 3 months after Shah Jahan was deposed and confined in the Agra Fort. Curiously on all rupees of Shahjahanabad dated 1069 AH, no regnal year is found, perhaps due to the presence of Aurangzeb in the city. This coin was struck after the defeat of Dara Shikhoh and even issues of Shah Shuja predate this coin.
