Jahangir, AR Sawai Rupee, Agra, AH 1019/5, Di, 'Farokht' couplet
Month Di, Persian couplet. Jahangir issued a series of coinage where a unique rhyming couplet was inscribed on the coin for every Ilahi month. This coin is the ‘Di’ coin from that series. The coin alternated between a square and round issue each month. The couplet reads:’Ba-Agrah Sikka bar Zar farokht dar Di Mah / Za noor-i-nam-i- Jahangir Shah Akbar Shah’. Translation: In Agra, the stamp on gold was kindled in Di Month (alternatively, ‘made acceptable in Di Month’), by the light of the name of King Jahangir (son of) King Akbar. This coin is a hitherto new discovery in silver in Mughal numismatics.
