Two goatherds leading two rams across a landscape

The interesting blue stencilled border on the album page of this Mughal miniature suggests a Herati influence of circa 1600. A collection of poems by Hafiz of Shiraz (d. circa 1390) commissioned by the Shamlu family, governors of Herat, dated to around 1600, bears similar coloured stencilled borders. This volume later passed to the Oudh Royal Library, Lucknow and was subsequently presented by Lord Teignmouth to either George III or George IV. See Muhammad Isa Waley, Islamic Manuscripts in the British Royal Collection: a Concise Catalogue, Leiden 1994, RCIN 1005017.
