Jahangir, AR Sawai Rupee, Lahore, AH 1020/6, Tir, Malik Din Panah couplet
25% Overweight. The couplet reads: 'Ba Mahe Tir Dar Lahore Zad, Ein Sikka Ra Bar Bar, Malik-e-Dinpanah, Shah-e-Jahangir, ibn Shah Akbar'. Translation: In the month of Tir at Lahore struck this coin in gold, the king, refuge of the faith, Shah Jahangir son of Shah Akbar. Jahangir issued a series of coinage where a unique rhyming couplet was inscribed on the coin for every Ilahi month. This coin is the ‘Tir’ coin from that series. The coin alternated between a square and round issue each month. The 'Sawai' standard was officially abolished on 11 Ardibihisht of AH 1020 - however at Lahore it seems to have continued for at least two months more as Tir is the 2nd Ilahi month after Ardhibihisht.
